Laminaria digitata is a large brown algae, also known as Oarweed, found in the Northern Atlantic Ocean, with Scotland’s seas holding a significant proportion of the UK’s kelp. Traditionally, it has been used as a fertiliser due to its high mineral content. Kelp has also been used in the treatment of iodine deficiencies.
Kombu Kelp has anti-inflammatory properties, boosts collagen production for a firming effect and cell renewal.
Kombu Kelp also contains high levels of many vitamins, including vitamins A, C, D, E, and all the B vitamins including B12, plus 60 trace minerals like calcium and magnesium. The main classes of active compounds identified from Kombu Kelp include: alginic acid (skin conditioner, thickener), laminaran, mannitol (skin conditioner), fucoidan (has skin regenerative effects and moisturizing properties). It has been studied extensively in relation to UV radiation protection for the skin.
