Scotch Broom Extract-SC
INCI name_ Sarothamnus Scoparius Extract
Scotch broom is a multi-branched woody perennial shrub native to Scotland, UK. It is rapid growing and reaches a height of about
2 meters. The shrub is recognized by its bright yellow flowers and long black fruits. Scotch broom is known to accumulate large
amounts of quinolizidine alkaloids like sparteine and sarothamin. The herb, flowers and roots are used pharmaceutically because
of their alkaloid content.
Traditionally in the Scottish highlands, the flowers were used in hair rinses for their lightening and brightening effects and
essential oil from the flowers is used in perfumery.
Scotch broom historically has also been taken orally for a variety of conditions related to the heart and blood circulation.
Its herb has also been used as a birthing aid to stimulate uterine contractions at birth.
Nowadays Scotch broom flowering tops extracts and powder are added to formulations used to treat chilblains and other
swellings on the skin caused by poor blood circulation. In tests conducted in our laboratory, scotch broom flower extract showed
very high antioxidant properties.

 - Increase in extract concentration correlates with the decrease in hydroxyl radicals i.e. increase in scavenging activity

 - Moderate scavenging activity at low Broom extract concentrations

 - Overall, exponential increase in scavenging activity from 6.3% to 50.0% extract concentration

 - Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties confirmed

 - DPPH radical scavenging activity of Broom extract is proportional to the extract concentration

 - Linear increase in scavenging activity from 0.63% to 3.0% extract concentrations

-Nearly maximum scavenging activity at 5.0% extract concentration

 - Antioxidant activity is confirmed
